How Can Mental Health Therapy Help Me
Therapy allows for non-biased support, problem-solving skills, and enhanced coping strategies for mental health wellness. Many people have found therapy to be a tremendous asset to managing personal growth, interpersonal relationships, family concerns, marriage issues, and emotional struggles with self. Additionally, therapy can help you:
· Gain a better understanding of yourself, your goals, and values
· Guidance in reaching your goals
· Develop skills for improving your relationships
· Find resolutions to the issues or concerns that led you to seek therapy
· Learn new ways to cope with stress and anxiety
· Manage anger, grief, depression, and other emotional battles
· Improve your communication and listening skills
· Change harmful behavior patterns and develop healthier habits
· Discover new ways to solve problems in your family and/or marriage
· Improve your self-esteem and boost self-confidence
What is therapy like?
Each person has a unique story, therefore, goals for therapy will vary on the individual. In general, you can expect to discuss the current events happening in your life, your personal history, past trauma, stress-related behaviors, and reported progress from previous therapy sessions. Depending on your specific needs, therapy may be short-term or long-term. Most commonly seen, regular weekly or bi-weekly sessions with your therapist can do wonders for the state of mental health. It is important to note that you will receive the best results from therapy if you actively participate in the process. The ultimate purpose of therapy is to help you utilize what you learn in each session to your day-to-day life. Beyond the hard work you do in therapy sessions, your therapist may suggest supplemental homework outside of therapy to add value to your journey. This includes mental health exercises such as reading, journaling, jotting down particular behaviors or taking action on your goals. If you are seeking psychotherapy, you should be ready to make positive changes in your life today, for a better version of yourself tomorrow.
Does what we talk about in therapy remain confidential?
Confidentiality is one of the most important components between a client and her therapist. Successful therapy requires a high degree of trust with sensitivity to each subject matter. Lotus Therapeutic Services is dedicated to keeping private discussions confidential. A written copy of your confidential disclosure agreement is kept on file, and you can rest assured that what you discuss in session will not be shared with anyone. This is called Informed Consent.
*State law and professional ethics require therapists to maintain confidentiality, EXCEPT for the following situations:
· Suspected past or present abuse or neglect of children, adults, and elders to the authorities, including Child Protection and law enforcement, based on information provided by the client or collateral sources.
· If the therapist has reason to suspect the client is seriously in danger of harming him/herself or has threatened to harm another person.
Do I really need therapy? I usually can manage my own problems.
Everyone goes through challenging situations in life, and while you may have successfully navigated through difficulties you have faced in the past, there’s nothing wrong with seeking extra support when you need it. Therapy is for people who have enough self-awareness and emotional intelligence to realize they need a helping hand, and that is something to be admired. By seeking therapy, you are taking action to change your life and become the best version of yourself. Therapy provides long-lasting effects and support, giving you the tools you need to avoid triggers, re-direct damaging patterns, and overcome life’s obstacles. Regardless of age, race, religion, sexual orientation, or history – everyone can benefit from therapy.
What about medication vs. therapy?
It is well-established that the long-term solution to mental health issues cannot be solved solely with medication. Instead of just treating symptoms, Lotus Therapeutic Services addresses the root cause of distress and the behavior patterns that can reverse progress. We believe that you can achieve sustainable growth and a greater sense of well-being with an integrative, holistic approach to wellness. Working with your medical doctor, you can determine what’s best for you, and in some cases, a combination of medication and therapy is the best course of action.
